This is a comprehensive and exhaustive collection of Dowland’s compositions for the Lute, with critical commentaries, lists of sources and biographical notes, as thoroughly compiled and edited by Diana Poulton & Basil Lam.  During His life time J. Dowland (1563-1625-26) was one of the few English composers whose fame spread throughout Europe.  Special difficulties surround any attempt to make a collected edition of Dowland’s lute music for he left no convenient printed music of his complete solo works such as he did with the songbooks, and the pieces have to be gathered together from the most diverse sources; sources which are scattered throughout the libraries and museums of Britain, America & continent of Europe.
