Alonso Mudarra published 3 libros en cifras para Vihuela in 1546. The second of those three books which is represented in this volume arranged for classic guitar in standard notation only, contains eight groups of pieces arranged by tono (or mode) for the vihuela. The groups of pieces are all organized in a similar manner: a tiento (prelude) followed by a succession of fantasias and arrangements of vocal works. This scheme clearly displays a taste for composite forms in the pucked string repertoire at a very early date. These works, originally for the vihuela, should not be seen merely as arrangements, since the vinhuela at the time was even closer to the modern day guitar than was the guitarra of that era. In addition, vihuelistas in sixteenth century
Spain were the earliest creators of the guitar and its music.
